The City of Philadelphia is the host of so many wonderful historic buildings and districts that often it can be overwhelming trying to select the most appropriate one for a photo shoot to capture the moments of a special occasion. We are sure this may have been the dilemma for the Old City Engagement Shoot, which celebrated the engagement of Nicole and Joshua by photographer John Ryan of J&J Studios of Philadelphia.

We can understand the possible challenge by this young couple to determine which setting would best suit their needs and ensure photographs that would capture the engagement and provide a memorialization of their commitment to one another. They were wise to consult and engage award-winning photographer John Ryan who could best assist them by helping to narrow the choices down based on their feedback and his knowledge.

Old City is a historic area and a treat for any visitor. The birthplace of American independence, this now modern neighborhood is best known for its major Colonial-era sites. Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the Betsy Ross House are top area attractions. Many of Old City’s residents live in restored 18th-century rowhouses that line some of the country’s oldest streets. Nightlife options for fashionable crowds include trendy eateries and bars along South 2nd Street. It also has several other buildings of note, which helped in this case to give Nicole and Joshua the Old City Engagement Shoot they and John felt were the best options for back drops.

The building above is the Merchant Exchange Building. Built between 1832 and 1834, the Merchants’ Exchange Building, also known as the Philadelphia Exchange, is located on the triangular site bounded by Dock Street, Third Street, and Walnut Streets. This monumental office building was designed by William Strickland and is an exquisite expression of the Greek Revival style, the first national American architectural style. The ideals of Greek democracy were attractive to citizens of the American Republic and provided the best model for American architects to emulate as a national style. The Greek Revival style can be differentiated from former styles such as the Georgian or Federal styles by its striving for archeological correctness in the use of the classical orders. The Choragic Monument of Lysicrates was the model for the building’s lantern. This 1834 Greek Revival masterpiece served as a place where businessmen exchanged everything from ships’ cargos to real estate and stocks.

The Second Bank of the United States Building is another interesting structure. This marvel of Greek Revival architecture houses a fine collection of over 100 portraits, many of them by 18th century artist Charles Willson Peale. Originally built to be the Second Bank of the United States, the building now draws visitors to gaze upon the faces of the leaders of the Revolutionary era.

These historic building while being very grand provided the couple with some touching moments together to showcase their love and commitment to each other during the Old City Engagement Photo Shoot.

The shot below is a great capture that highlights the couple’s commitment and in a way shows how they will now proceed, together, to begin their journey from this point forward in their new life and eventually becoming man and wife.
