In our day to day lives, there are so many causes that require support and funding to help and address a variety of issues. This includes health – physical and mental – as well as equality, living conditions, and a host of others. There are many groups that have been formed that strive to provide focus on a particular cause as well as to generate interest and seeking the financial support necessary to make an impact to overcoming the obstacles for those who they are trying to benefit from their efforts. Once such group is the Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride, and through the following photographs you will get a glimpse of their event, the Best of Philadelphia Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride 2023.

The Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride, or DGR as it is also known is an incredible fund-raising initiative. The Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride unites classic and vintage styled motorcycle riders from all over the world to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health. The group was founded in Sydney, Australia, by Mark Hawwa. It was inspired by a photo of TV Show Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit. Mark decided a themed ride would be a great way of connecting niche motorcycle enthusiasts and communities while raising funds to support the men in our lives. To date the group has raised $37.5 Million, engaged over 340,000 riders world-wide across 121 countries – very impressive numbers! The Philadelphia chapter of the DGR took place on Sunday, May 21, 2023. The ride consisted of 146 volunteer riders, and to date raised $31,965.00, exceeding their original goal of $10,000!

This is an incredible effort and one that requires quite a bit of coordination and planning. Riders are sought though social media posts as well as to the official website, https://www.gentlemansride.com/. As you can imagine, there are many moving parts to this initiative. And there is a lot of activity and many individuals on the move! So it was important for the group to secure the talents of an excellent photographer to memorialize this grand event for all to see. And this group chose wisely, by enlisting photographer John Ryan of J&J Studios of Philadelphia. John Ryan is an award-winning photographer widely known for his incredible wedding shoots as well as other notable events. But more about John a bit later. Right now, let’s bring forward some of his candid shots of the events that made up the Best of Philadelphia Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride 2023.

Every event such as a ride as this has many facets and components. Gathering the individuals, acknowledging participants, revving up the crowd of supporters who provide the donations sought for the cause the DGR was founded for, and of course the actual travel of the many motorcycles that take part in the event! This requires a keen focus of what is going on in order to prepare to capture key moments of the ride, and as the photographs will show, John was the logical choice for such an undertaking.

Let’s start with some of the participants who made up the Best of Philadelphia Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride 2023.

As you can see, the Best of Philadelphia Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride 2023 consisted of people from all walks of life from all parts of Pennsylvania and beyond. This diverse participation of so many people devoted to one cause is hear-warming. It exemplifies the commitment and passion these individual folks have as a collective unit for a cause that is close to their hearts.

Now that we’ve see some of the participants who make up the cycling contingent, lets see some of the motorcycles they are riding in the event.

The diversity of the motorcycles is as varied as the owners themselves! Each piece of machinery is a splendid representation of the rider themselves and shows sides of their personality as well as their interest and respect for the cycle itself. It is a sight to see all of these machines assembled for this cause as they prepare to join the ride for the Best of Philadelphia Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride 2023.

Now that we’ve seen some of the riders, and some of the machinery they will be participating on, we can move on to some photos capturing the beginning of the actual ride portion of the event!

So now that we have the participants, along with a flavor of some of the motorcycles that will be ridden, and some pre-ride announcements, we move forward to the actual ride. This is the culmination of much effort of planning and coordination to get this many people together, organized, and participating in a great event! Thankfully the weather held up so it removed at least one challenge that could have made the event problematic. So now let’s see the riders!

Now that you’ve seen some of the participants riding along the designated path, the ride has completed and moved towards the end of the event. The next few photographs capture the end of the ride and from the smiles on their faces it appears that the experience was a positive one, and that the goal that was established early on had been met, and these folks have done a great service to such a worthy cause.

While this event is meaningful, helpful to many, and quite impressive to carry off, it also presents a number of challenges for someone to assist in memorializing the event and capturing the action itself.
