This fall, J&J Studios had the opportunity to volunteer at the Brushes with Cancer Philadelphia event for Twist out Cancer–an organization dedicated to fighting cancer and community action and support programs across the US. This particular event was significant in that it matches artists with cancer patients, caregivers and supporters. Over a period of 4-6 months, the artists will work with their inspiration to create a unique piece of artwork that is reflective of their journey with cancer. This culminates in the photos you see here–an evening of hope, inspiration, and inspiring stories. The artwork is auctioned off to support Twist out Cancer community support programs.
The event attracted about 500 people and was held at Yard’s Brewing. A variety of corporate sponsors came out for the event including TD Bank, Stateside Vodka, Vetri Cucina, Joan Shepp, The Coleman Foundation, among others.

Artist Statement: “I’ve had this vision of what cancer looks like. A growth. Clingy, burning, viscous. And after experiencing a cancer related loss and meeting Julia, I feel like I have a much clearer view of what cancer is. She’s so positive. Very sure of herself. Looking to the future. That’s what keeps us going. Looking forward.”
Inspired by Julia Allmond Philadelphia, PA Twist On Cancer: “Cancer has twisted my view at a young age on how to live everyday life. It has taught me to control what I can and let go of what is out of my control. I value time spent with friends and family more than ever now and make my health a top priority. One piece of advice I’d give to anybody, cancer survivor or not, is to not sweat the small things. Life’s too short, live in the moment!” ~Julia Allmond~
The evening’s entertainment featured Jennifer Alvarez Hula Hoop Extraordinaire.
Also featured was Meredith Klein Co-founder and Director of the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School and Gustavo Rember, Buenos Aires based Tango Dancer, Choreographer and Instructor, accompanied on piano by Emiliano Messiez and on bandoneon by Javier Sanchez.
