Kendi is in the midst of a career transition, and we recently had the opportunity to have professional headshots taken for her. This brought up a lot of questions for us about what makes a good headshot and what makes it worse, and how important it is to have them done well.

After all, you might think that getting headshots would be a simple, straightforward process. Do you want an updated photo for your networking profile? No problem! You’re going for an interview and need a clean, professional headshot for your website and in presentations? Easy peasy! But as is often the case, photography is a complex medium that takes a surprising amount of knowledge and experience to pull off well, and if you’re not careful, you can end up with disappointing results.

Kendi’s headshot photography session was a blast. She came into J&J Studios and we started with a consultation on what type of photography she was looking for. We talked about her business and where she wanted to take it, and then we discussed the look that she was going for in her photos. Kendi had ideas of how she wanted her pictures to turn out but she also allowed me to give my input on some things that I thought could make them better.

Before we started the photoshoot we went over different poses that we had come up with, so that she knew what to do during the photoshoot. The photoshoot went really well, it was fun and Kendi seemed like she was enjoying herself throughout the process. After getting a few pictures taken in one of our locations, we finished up the pictures inside on our seamless background. We liked some of the poses that Kendi did. So, I showed them to Kendi and gave her a few options of which ones she liked best from each location.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT HEADSHOT?

Having a photo that you’re proud of is crucial for networking, job-seeking, and even social media. You want to put your best face forward in all these settings. Therefore, it’s worth investing in a quality headshot.

But what makes a great headshot? 

• The photographer you choose is crucial. It’s imperative to hire someone with experience who knows how to make you look both professional and approachable.
• A flattering pose is crucial. Experiment with how to pose yourself in front of the camera. Most people tend to stand with their weight on one foot, but try to find a comfortable position that feels natural to you.
• Plenty of light is crucial. Make sure there’s plenty of available light so that you’re not squinting or straining your eyes in any way.
• Stand close (but not too close) to the camera. The same goes for how far away from the camera you should be standing. Stand too close, and you might end up having an expression that looks extremely tense or uncomfortable. Too far away, and you might have a very generic look on your face.
• Use props if they make sense for what you’re doing. A book, a cup of coffee, or a laptop—all can be used as props.
