Philly Acro Yoga Photography Session


When Laura Berry contacted J&J Studios to photograph a Philly acro yoga session, we were thrilled to jump at the opportunity. Before we got to the location, we had no idea what acro yoga entailed, but that quickly changed. This session was fun, exciting, and filled with so many physical moves that kept me on my toes throughout the whole photo shoot.
What Is Acro Yoga?
Acro Yoga is a more vigorous type of yoga that needs a partner to be able to perform successfully because majority of the exercises involve one person lifting the other. This form of yoga consists of acrobatics, yoga, and Thai massage. It is fun, exciting, playful, and therapeutic. When choosing a partner to participate with you, the objective is to be open and willing to find trust, patience, and communication within each other. It is also crucial to be completely present to help one another. Most people relate acro yoga to cheerleading, circus arts, or even dance.
How Long Has It Been Around?
Acro Yoga was founded in the United States in 2003 by a yogi and a dancer. The purpose is to integrate the connection and balance from yoga, the energy and fitness from acrobatics, and the healing power of therapeutics. To help people of all backgrounds and cultures connect, this form of yoga encourages everyone to participate and work together. While participating in Philly acro yoga, the goal is to take risks, have fun, and build trust with others.
How to Join The Fun
Acro Yoga typically requires two people, but sometimes three people join in at once. The “base” person does all the lifting. Laura Berry’s partner (as seen in the photos) is the “base.” The “flyer” person (Laura) does all the acro yoga moves. If a third person were present, they would be the “spotter.” Their job would be to assist in any way possible and to be there for safety. It is common for most Philly acro yoga professionals to start out by training solo until they are comfortable working with a partner or group. Each acro yoga participant learns the essentials of lifting someone easily and safely as well as how to carefully perform yoga moves in the air.
What Are The Benefits?
There are many benefits to participating in Philly acro yoga. Both, the flyer and the base gain an exceptional amount of strength in their arms, legs, and core muscles. Flyers, like Laura, also improve their circulation and confidence by doing various exercises such as headstands and handstands. In addition, participants also learn to build a physical connection, emotional connection, trust, and partnership with others.
Acro Yoga Is Growing in The Philly Area
Laura Berry is not the only passionate acro yoga partaker in Philadelphia. In fact, acro yoga is growing substantially throughout Philly and its suburbs. With its increasing popularity, acro yoga is building a sense of community within Philadelphia in hopes of gaining more participants and building connections amongst each other.

As time went on, the acro yoga session became more intense. Laura Berry and her partner’s moves were impressive! The way she was able to maneuver comfortably and skillfully was astonishing. We enjoyed capturing each shot and angle of their different acro yoga poses, and we would love to document many more of these types of sessions in the future.
