YERKES HEADSHOT PHOTOGRAPHY: JUDY
Yerkes Headshot Photography
When Judy came to J&J Studios for a headshot photography session, she had one question that she really wanted to get answered.” I have this crucial need to have professional photos taken. Is that true?” she asked me. I smiled and said: “Absolutely!” But of course, it was only a matter of time before I needed to explain my reply.
As professional photographers, we’ve seen the benefits firsthand. In addition to giving our clients more professional-looking images, having good headshots also boosts confidence. In fact, they’ve told us that going through the entire process of getting their photos done makes them feel good about themselves. This is because they’re making an investment in their careers and taking the first step towards creating a personal brand for themselves. That kind of empowerment—of feeling like you’re in control of your career—is something we want for everyone.
YERKES HEADSHOT PHOTOGRAPHY WITH JUDY
Judy’s headshot photography session went pretty well and is an ideal example of how fun the process can be. She was open to ideas and suggestions. Moreover, she even improvised when we suggested that she be more energetic in some of the shots (which resulted in one of my favorite shots). The whole thing was great because it showed that you don’t have to be stiff or self-conscious in front of a camera. You just have to keep an open mind and play around with what works for you.
FACTORS THAT DETERMINE A GREAT HEADSHOT
A great headshot is a combination of style and substance. The image itself should reflect the unique characteristics that make you the best possible version of yourself. It’s not just a matter of fitting into a generic mold because it happens to be trendy at the moment.
- A good photographer
If you are thinking about taking your own photo, make sure you have someone who knows how to use the equipment and can take flattering shots. You need someone who has experience with professional equipment and knows how to make your face look its best!
- Good lighting
Lighting is one of the most crucial elements in creating a great photo. Ensure there is enough light so your face is not too dark and shadows do not obscure your features. However, if too much light hits your face directly, it can wash out detail and make colors appear duller than they really are.
- Clothing choice
Clothing should be simple and natural-looking but still polished enough so that it does not distract from the subject matter (you). Do not wear anything too bright or flashy.
- Pick the right background.
A background that’s too distracting will ruin any headshot photo. Especially if it has a lot of colors or patterns that compete with your face for attention (i.e., red walls). You want something simple and solid-colored that doesn’t take away from the subject matter — namely, you! The background should be light enough so that it doesn’t distract from your facial features but dark enough so that it doesn’t wash out your skin tones.
